Payment Method and Security

We use PayPal exclusively for payments and you don’t need to have a PayPal Account to take advantage of their secure process.

Our purpose in using PayPal exclusively is to ensure a more secure shopping experience for our Customers. Far too many eCommerce sites are requesting Credit Card information in order to process sales. We opted to NOT take part in handling that information and thereby allow the integrity and reputation of PayPal to establish peace of mind for GemWerx Customers.

About PayPal

PayPal is an online payment gateway and virtual wallet that serves millions of customers every day who are located in more than 190 countries and regions around the globe. Some common uses for PayPal include sending money to friends, family, and loved ones; receiving payments for work that has been completed; and buying and selling on eBay. PayPal allows account owners to link a bank account, credit card, or debit card to the account so that he or she can buy and sell goods and services from many merchants and private sellers from around the world without exposing private financial information.

PayPal was founded in 1998, and since then, has been the preferred method of payment for all eBay auctions and fixed priced listings. Users should know how quick and simple it is to create a PayPal account as well as the many uses and benefits that come along with being a PayPal user.

Credit Card Security

When you sign up for a PayPal account, you type in the credit cards and bank accounts you wish to use for purchases one time on the PayPal secure system. Once that is accomplished, you never again have to disclose your credit card information online. By paying with PayPal, you keep your credit card information private, meaning that you can shop without worrying about a hacker downloading your account data from your online merchant.

Cost of using Paypal

One of the best reasons for using PayPal is its cost: free. No annual membership fees, no processing fees, no service charges. Shoppers using PayPal get all the powerful advantages associated with the service and do not have to pay one dime.

No PayPal Account Needed

If you don’t have a PayPal account and don’t want one don’t worry, you can use your credit card with the need for an account.

About GemWerx Security

We do retain certain Personal Information such as your name, email details and billing and shipping addresses so its fair that we should provide the best security possible to protect that information.

Security Certificate

We take great care to protect that information in a number of ways with the most common being the use of a Security Certificate.  You can easily check that our site (and any other website you visit) has been authenticated in any internet browser you are using. Proof of the authentication appears in a variety of ways — the address bar or part of the URL may be green (or any other colour depending on your browser) or there will be a padlock symbol next to the address or in another part of the address bar. Sometimes, you may have to click a similar padlock symbol at the bottom of the browser page to see the certificate.

This certificate protects the communication between your computer and our website by encrypting the communication traffic thus protecting it from hackers attempting to intercept it.

Security Certificates on their own though do not prevent hackers accessing your information by hacking our website so we take some extra steps.

Preventing Malware

We’ve all heard about malware (viruses, trojans, etc) and it’s not uncommon for hackers to breach the security of a website in one manner or another.  For now let’s assume that our website isn’t protected other than by a security certificate.  In that case a hacker may install some form of malware that can compromise the site.  In our case as we use WordPress as basis of our website that malware may come in the form of .htaccess file Threats, TimThumb Exploits, Backdoor Scripts, Core File Changes or other Known Threats.  We regularly scan our website using a tool from and if any malware was detected we use that tool to eliminate it.

These types of malware are often introduced when a plugin (our shop for example uses the wooCommerce plugin) is installed.  While most plugins sourced from reputable sources are free of malware it always pays to check before we install a plugin.  To do that we use VirusTotal ( to check the plugin.  VirusTotal use 50 or more virus detection tools to check the plugin file and if any one of those virus detectors tells us that a virus has been detected we will  not install that plugin.

However, hackers can compromise the website in other ways and again GemWerx ensures that we protect our website to make it as safe as possible.
